Meet the Artist

Black Violet is led by Heidi Phelps, a fine artist, illustrator, and storyteller based in Washington, DC. Her creative journey began in 2011 when she turned her tiny studio apartment into a screen printing space—transforming her kitchen into a makeshift darkroom and her bathtub into a temporary washout booth. Her work has been exhibited across Washington, DC, and in galleries nationwide, and is archived by the Smithsonian. Heidi’s Black Violet Tarot deck is published worldwide by Rockpool Publishing in partnership with Simon & Schuster.

Inspired by a wide range of influences—including Aubrey Beardsley, Edward Gorey, Charles Addams, Frida Kahlo, and Salvador Dalí’s Alice in Wonderland—Heidi’s art focuses on women’s stories, drawing from both life and lore. When she’s not creating, Heidi enjoys time with her daughter, Leyla, her husband, Erdem, and their cats, Daisy and Eddie.
